John Marshall was born in Nottingham in July 1886 and enlisted into the Royal Artillery in May 1889. He went to India in 1894 and transferred to the Unattached List in 1900, being posted to the Calcutta Port Defence Volunteers as 2nd Class Sergeant Instructor. He was awarded the L.S. & G.C. in September 1907 as 1st Class Sergeant Instructor of the Cossipore Artillery Volunteers.
