Henry Richards was born in 1837 in the parish of Edgbaston, Warwickshire, and attested for the Royal Artillery at Maidstone, Kent, in September 1858. He served in Canada from 1861 to 1869, and subsequently in India, being awarded the L.S. & G.C. medal with Gratuity of £5 in January 1877. He was finally discharged at Woolwich in July 1878.
