George Bertie Benjamin Hobart was born on 3 February 1838, and entered the Royal Artillery as a Gentleman Cadet in August 1855. He served with the expedition to China in 1860 and was present at Sinho, Tang Ku, and the capture of the Taku Forts. He commanded the Royal Artillery in the Bechuanaland expedition of 1884-85, for which no medals were issued, and received an Honourable mention for his services. He became Colonel in July 1886 and retired in February 1895 as Honorary Major General.
