James Finnamore was born in India in 1833, son of Isaac Finnamore who was a Farrier in the Bengal Horse Artillery. He took part in the Indian Mutiny as a Trumpeter with the 3rd Troop, 1st Brigade, Bengal Horse Artillery, and was present at the defeat of the Sialkote Mutineers at Trimmoo Ghat, 12 July 1857, and at the defeat of the Jodhpur Legion at Narnaul on 16 November 1857, on which occasion he was wounded. In 1861 he was transferred to the Royal Artillery as a Trumpeter in ‘C’ Battery, 2nd Horse Brigade, Royal Horse Artillery. He is entitled to the Indian Mutiny medal without clasps.
