John Cook was born in the parish of Earl Sohan, near Framlingham, Suffolk, in May 1819. He attested at London for unlimited service in the Bengal Artillery and arrived in India in September 1843. He served in the Punjab Campaign and was present at the battles of Chilianwala and Goojerat. At the outbreak of the Indian Mutiny he was stationed at Sialkote, and took part in the Siege of Delhi, the relief of Lucknow, and the capture of Lucknow (Medal with three clasps). He was wounded at Lucknow by a musket ball in the groin on 15 November 1857.
