Joseph Vavasour Lane was appointed Assistant Surgeon in October 1858 and attached to the 4th Foot in February 1859. He served throughout the Abyssinian Campaign of 1868 in medical charge of the 1st Battalion 4th King’s Own, and was present at the action of Arogee and capture of Magdala (medal). He became Surgeon, Army Medical Department, in October 1868, and died on 4 April 1873.
