In 1847 the decision was taken to replace Worcester’s outdoor corn market. Two rival schemes were built; the first, in Angel street, was erected in 1848 and remained in use for 50 years before it subsequently became a boxing hall, an auction house and today an Italian restaurant, while the second, built in the original Cornmarket in 1849, was closed after a few years and sold at a huge loss to a music hall operator
