D.C.M. London Gazette 2 December 1919. ‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. On 22nd October 1918, north of Saulzoir, the enemy subjected the railway crossing to heavy shell fire whilst a convoy of ammunition wagons was passing. Two teams were killed and several N.C.O.’s and men killed and wounded. He was in charge of a portion of the convoy, and was blown off his horse by a bursting shell, but in spite of being wounded he remained on the spot in the face of continued shelling until every man and horse was clear of the crossing, thus allowing free passage for other traffic’.

William Mason Apps was born in 1890. Coming from Lower Edmonton, he enlisted into the Territorial Army at the Barbican, London, on 27 May 1908. In the Great war he served on the Western Front with the R.F.A. For his bravery he was awarded the Military Medal; then towards the end of the war, he was wounded and awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for his conspicuous gallantry. He was discharged on 31 March 1920. Apps saw further service during the Second World War. Sold with original Discharge Certificate and copied Character Certificate.
