South Africa 1834-53 (Timy. Hobbs, 2nd Bn. 60th Rifles) minor contact marks, good very fine £300-350

Timothy Hobbs was born in the Parish of Crowhall Abbots, near Wickwar, Gloucestershire in September 1822. A Labourer by occupation, he attested for the 60th Regiment at Bath on 15 March 1841, aged 18 years, 6 months. With the regiment he served in the Cape of Good Hope for 6 years, 7 months and in India, 1 year, 2 months. When in Africa, he served in the Third Kaffir War during 1851-53, and in India he served in the supression of the Indian Mutiny based at Calcutta during 1858; for which services he was awarded the South Africa Medal 1834-53 but not the Indian Mutiny Medal. He was discharged at his own request after 21 years service at Winchester on 8 April 1862; his intended place of residence being Southampton. In July 1885 Hobbs was admitted to the Royal Hospital, Chelsea as an In-Pensioner. He died at the Royal Hospital on 4 May 1894 and was buried at Brookwood Military Cemetery, Pirbright, Surrey. Sold with a quantity of copied reseach, including service papers and census extracts.
