William Haydn Pugh joined the Territorial Army prior to the start of the Second World War. He was granted a Regular Army Emergency Commission in the Royal Artillery as a 2nd Lieutenant on 14 March 1941. He was promoted to War Substantive Lieutenant on 15 September 1942 and at the end of the war was granted the rank of Honorary Lieutenant. Pugh rejoined the Territorial Army in 1947 and was appointed a Captain in the R.A. (T.A.) on 28 January 1948. The next year he was awarded the Efficiency Medal. This notified in the London Gazette of 6 May 1949. Captain Pugh served in the T.A. until he transferred to the T.A.R.O. on 24 May 1955. Having attained the age limit, Pugh ceased to belong to the T.A.R.O. on 23 July 1963.
