Alfred Fyson was born in Fordham, Cambridgeshire on 4 April 1848. Fyson was a Civil Engineer and was admitted to the A.M.Inst.C.E. on 4 May 1875 and became a full member in May 1884. Prior to this he was employed in the Locomotive Workshops of Messrs. Cross & Co. of St. Helens. Then with the firm of Mr W. Wilson, M.Inst.C.E., he was involved in surveying, designing and estimating various docks and railways. In 1876 he went to Spain to make a detailed survey for the Jerez-Algeciras Railway, having full charge of the survey party. In 1878 he went into partnership with Mr A. Dawson, M.Inst.C.E. and was involved in designing iron work for several railways, including the Fulham and Ealing Extension of the Metropolitan Railway; the Jerez and Algeciras; the Banbury and Cheltenham District; the Inner Circle, and Chatham and Dover Extension

Fyson joined the H.A.C. in 1873. He was granted a commission on 9 January 1886; was promoted to Captain in January 1895 and was advanced to Major in December 1898. He resigned his commission and retired into the Veteran Company with permission to retain his rank and wear his uniform, on 9 March 1901. He was awarded the Volunteer Force Long Service Medal in A.O. 189 of August 1907. Fyson was awarded the M.B.E. (Civil) as ‘First Assistant Superintendent at a Remount Depot’, notified in the London Gazette of 7 June 1918.
