Bertram Masefield served in the Boer War, firstly with the King’s Royal Rifle Corps, and then with the Army Pay Corps. As a Staff Serjeant in the A.P.C. he was awarded the Army L.S. & G.C. by Army Order 106 of April 1918. He was granted a Regular Army Commission as a Lieutenant (Assistant Paymaster) in the R.A.P.C. on 1 January 1940, being promoted to Temporary Captain in May 1941 and War Substantive Captain in January 1943. For his services in the War he received the Defence and War Medals. For his continued long service, Masefield was awarded the Army L.S. & G.C. (Regular Army), notified in London Gazette 18 June 1948. At the conclusion of his service he was granted the Honorary rank of Captain. Captain Masefield died on 19 December 1963, having previously lived at Whaddon, near Salisbury, Wiltshire.
