Caligula (AD 37-41), Gaius called Caligula (37-41), Sestertius, c. 39-40, Rome, Pietas seated left on stool, holding patera and resting left elbow on small draped figure standing facing on base, rev. divo avg s c, Gaius togate, standing left, sacrificing over garlanded altar, victimarius holding bull for sacrifice and attendant holding a patera standing on either side, garlanded hexastyle temple of Divus Augustus in background, pediment decorated with sacrificial scene, quadriga and Victories as acroteria, statues of Romulus and Æneas along roof line, 28.64g/5h (RIC 44; CBN 104; MIR 23). Some pitting on obverse edge, otherwise very fine, smoothed green-brown patina (£300-400)
