William Lloyd was born in Poplar, London. A Labourer by occupation and a member of the 3rd Battalion Hampshire Regiment (Militia), he attested for the Hampshire regiment at Winchester on 12 April 1900, aged 18 years, 1 month. With the regiment he served in South Africa, January-March 1902; India, March 1902-February 1903; Aden, February-June 1903; Somaliland, June 1903-June 1904. He was transferred to the Army Reserve in April 1908 and was discharged in April 1912.
