John Robertson was born on 8 January 1863. He served all his career in the Indian Medical Department. Robertson served in Burma 1885-87 when he was a Sub-Assistant Apothecary. He then served as an Assistant Surgeon, 2nd Class, ranking as Sub-Conductor, from 1893. From 15 October 1895 he was stationed at the Lawrence Military Asylum at Murree. From 12 February 1897 he was ranked as a Conductor. He was based in the Central Provinces being seconded for Civil Employment and served as Assistant to the Civil Surgeon at Nagpur. Robertson was promoted to Assistant Surgeon 1st Class, ranking as Conductor on 12 February 1904. He was awarded the Army L.S. & G.C. in 1904. Also serving with the Volunteers in India, he was awarded the Volunteer Force Long Service in 1905. Robertson was promoted Senior Assistant-Surgeon with the honorary rank of Lieutenant on 23 September 1908 and Senior Assistant Surgeon with the honorary rank of Captain on 8 December 1913. At the time he was stationed at Narsinghpur. In 1915 he was stationed at Ahola in the Central Provinces. He was then promoted to Senior Assistant-Surgeon with the honorary rank of Major on 21 September 1917, being stationed at His Excellency The Viceroy’s Dispensary. In 1919 he was awarded the I.S.O. for his work in the Indian Civil Service. His citation reads:

‘Honorary Major John Robertson, Indian Medical Department, in charge of Viceroy’s Dispensary’ ‘Major Robertson entered the service as Assistant Surgeon in 1885. His record of service from the very first has been exceptionally good. He is certainly one of the most efficient members in the Indian Medical Department and deserving of reward in consideration of his long and eminent service, both as a very successful Civil Surgeon in the Central Provinces and for the good work he has performed in his present appointment’.

He was finally promoted to Senior Assistant-Surgeon with the honorary rank of Lieutenant-Colonel on 1 January 1926. He retired on 1 March 1926 and died at East Sheen, Surrey in 1937. Sold with full copied research.
