Hubert Cecil Roberts was born in 1888, the youngest of 6 boys. He was an M.A. of Exeter College, Oxford, and was ordained deacon in 1912 and priest in 1913. He served curacies in Northampton, Newbury and Marlow, and was an Army Chaplain in France during World War I. In 1926 he was appointed Rector of Long Wittenham, Berkshire, and remained there for 40 years until his retirement. He joined the Special Constabulary in 1939 and served in the Long Wittenham district until 1945. He died in Oxford on 20 January 1975, aged 86.
