John Cunningham was born at Paisley, Renfrewshire, and enlisted at Pontefract, Yorkshire, on 10 June 1880, a volunteer from the 5th West York Militia. He landed in Egypt on 5 August 1882, and received a severe gun shot wound in the right thigh at the battle of Kassassin on the 28th August. He was invalided home at the end of September and transferred to Netley Military Hospital where he received his Egypt medal personally from the hands of Queen Victoria on 25 November 1882. He was discharged at Netley, being medically unfit for further service, on 12 June 1883. Sold with full research.
