A particularly fine Boer War tribute silver-cased illuminated address to Private W. H. Christy of the 1st Volunteer Battalion, Manchester Regiment, the hinged rectangular case with engraved “Wigan Detachment” crest to front, together with two flags in the upper corners, and the dates ‘1900’ and ‘1901’ in the lower corners, and the reverse of the case with engraved crest and motto of Wigan, the left hand side interior containing a group photograph of detachment members, and the right hand interior the illuminated address, ‘Presented to Private William Hy. Christy of the 1st Vol. Batt. Manchester Regiment by the Townspeople of Wigan on His Return from Active Service in South Africa as a Small Token of Their Appreciation of His Loyalty and Devotion to Duty to Queen and Country in Responding to the Call for Volunteers at a Time of National Emergency and of the Courage He has Displayed during the Long and Arduous Campaign’, the script in several colours and styles, and signed at the end by the Mayor of Wigan, the case with hallmarks for London 1900 and maker Mappin & Webb, 112mm. by 176mm., generally in good condition and a most attractive “Tribute” £250-300
