Richard Durant Trotter was born in May 1887 and was educated at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge. Commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 6th Battalion, Rifle Brigade in August 1914, he first entered the French theatre of war in January 1915, but was placed on the Retired List ‘on account of ill-health contracted on active service’ in 1917 (London Gazette of 18 October that year refers).

Trotter was a Member of the Royal Company of Archers (The King’s and Queen’s Body Guard for Scotland) from 1933 to 1963, and Chairman of the Alliance Assurance Company from 1942 to 1949. He died in March 1968.
