Rifle Bde.); Army L.S. & G.C., V.R., 3rd issue, small letters (346 Sergt., 4th Rifle Bde.); Army Meritorious Service Medal, G.V.R., 1st issue (C./Sjt., 4/Rif. Bde.), the second with contact marks, nearly very fine, otherwise generally good very fine or better (4) £600-800

Robert Thurlow was born in Thorndon, Suffolk in July 1839 and enlisted in the Rifle Brigade in October 1857. Posted to the 4th Battalion, he went on to witness active service in Canada during the Fenian troubles of 1866, and in the Jowaki operations of 1877-78, gaining advancement to Sergeant in June 1867, in which year he re-engaged for further service. Thurlow was finally discharged at the regimental depot in Winchester in October 1878, and gave his intended place of residence as the Post Office, Colchester. He died in October 1914, aged 75 years.
