Shipwrecked Fishermen and Mariners Royal Benevolent Society, ‘Emile Robin Life Saving Award’ Purse, 92 x 79mm., leather purse with gilt flag and inscription, a little worn, fairly good condition, rare £100-140

The ‘Emile Robin’ award arose from a Trust Fund set up in 1880 by M. Emile Robin of Paris. Similar funds were set up in several other countries. It was stipulated that interest from the fund should be given annually to the Captain and Chief Officer of the British vessel that had carried out the most meritorious rescue of the crew of another ship within that year. In some years no award was made and in others, the awarded was divided between two pairs of officers. The fund was administered and the award adjudged by the Committee of the S.F.M.R.B.S. The recipients were required to be British; the Captain would receive 4/5 of the award; the Chief Officer 1/5. In addition to the monetary award it was usual in later years for the recipients to also receive the Society’s barometer and a presentation scroll. The ‘Emile Robin’ monetary award was presented to the recipient in an inscribed leather purse.
