D.C.M. London Gazette 1 May 1918: East of Bourlon Wood 27th November - 4th December 1917:-

‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. Always cool and courageous, he performed his duties regardless of hostile fire, and though blown up by a shell and wounded he still carried on, and rendered invaluable aid to his company commander. He was also instrumental in digging out a machine gun team who had been buried by a shell, his promptitude in getting to work saving all their lives. No man could have set a higher example of the duties of a company serjeant-major in action.’
