Hubert Mallett was born in Brixton on 17 December 1883, the son of John and Jane Charlotte Gillespie Mallett. He was educated at the City of London School and in 1904 joined the Blackheath Harriers. Employed by the Anglo-South American Bank, he was posted to Buenos Aires in 1906. Whilst there he continued his sporting activities, being a member of the Tigre Boat Club, Tigre Sailing Club, Belgians Rugby Football Team and Olivos Lawn Tennis Club. With the onset of war, he returned to the United Kingdom in March 1915. He was commissioned into the 2/5th Battalion East Surrey Regiment on 20 May 1915 and was appointed a Lieutenant in August 1917. Attached to the 1st Battalion The Queen’s (Royal West Surrey) Regiment he entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 15 October 1917. He was mentioned in Sir Douglas Haig’s despatch of 28 November 1918, ‘for gallant and distinguished conduct during the operations South of Meteren, 12th to 24th April, 1918’. He was gassed on 20 September 1918 and was invalided home. In a weakened state, he died of pneumonia following influenza on 3 February 1919, aged 35 years. He was buried in Brompton Cemetery.
