Richard Hardy was born in Paddington, London and enlisted at London. Serving with the 2nd Battalion Grenadier Guards he entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 31 August 1914. He died of wounds on 9 November 1914. Having no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial.
