Colonial Auxiliary Forces Officers’ Decoration, V.R., silver, silver-gilt, unmarked, the reverse engraved, ‘Major J. B. Hart, Frontier Mounted Rifles’, complete with top bar with brooch-pin for wearing, good very fine and scarce £200-250
The Frontier Mounted Rifles, originally raised by Lieutenant-Colonel E. O. Hutchinson in Cathcart District in the Eastern Province and titled the Cathcart Mounted Rifles, was increased in strength to 250 men in 1887, Hart joining the corps as a Major in January of the following year. However, on the outbreak of hostilities in South Africa in October 1899, the men refused to cross the frontier, and the regiment was disbanded.
