South Atlantic 1982, with rosette (AEM (W) 1 G S Smith D175584B HMS Hermes) in its named card box of issue, good very fine £450-500

Gary Steven Smith was born on 3 February 1962 and joined the Royal Navy on 9 January 1979. He changed his name by Deed to Gary Steven Barclay-James in April 1987, and was discharged from the Navy on completion of his period of engagement on 2 February 1989. Extracts from his testimonial state:

‘Leading Air Engineering Mechanic (Weapon Electrical) Barclay-James joined the Royal Navy in 1979 as a Weapons Air Engineering Mechanic and on completion of basic training was employed on a Squadron servicing and repairing Wessex helicopters.

Later employed at sea in the Air Weapons Workshop of HMS
Hermes, Barclay-James carried out servicing and modification of aircraft equipments. In this technical environment his ability to accept responsibility was recognised by way of recommendation for early advancement. Following a short period ashore at a Royal Naval Air Station he volunteered and was accepted for further sea service in HMS Illustrious where he worked on the supply and maintenance of weapons and explosives.’
