John Norman Graham was born in Liverpool in September 1891 and entered the Royal Navy as a Probationary Sick Berth Attendant in February 1911. Having then served in the cruiser - and destroyer depot ship - H.M.S. Dido from the outbreak of hostilities until June 1915, he was employed ashore at the R.N. Hospital Haslar and at the R.N. College, Greenwich, latterly, it would appear, as a laboratory assistant. He purchased his discharge in September 1919, in order that he could take up an appointment as an Assistant to a Leicestershire County Council Medical Officer.
