Arthur Otway Jacob was born on 28 August 1867 and educated at St. Columba’s College, Co. Dublin. Jacob was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the 20th Hussars from the Militia in December 1888. He was promoted to Lieutenant in September 1891; Captain in September 1895; Adjutant in June 1896 and Major in June 1902. He served in the Boer War, taking part in the operations in the Transvaal, February and April-May 1902, and in the Orange River Colony in January-April and May 1902. During the Great War he served as Assistant Officer at the Infantry Record Office. Jacob was the husband of Violet Kennedy-Erskine (1863-1946), the famous Scottish authoress.
