Charles Edward Lucas was born in Birmingham. A labourer by occupation and a serving member of the 6th Battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment, he enlisted into the Coldstream Guards at Birmingham on 27 February 1899, aged 18 years. With the Guards, he served in South Africa, 26 November 1901-6 October 1902. In the Great War he entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 13 August 1914. He received a shrapnel wound during September, and on 30 October 1914 was captured and remained a prisoner-of-war in Germany for the rest of the conflict, returning home on 6 January 1919. He was discharged on completion of his second period of engagement on 30 April 1920.
