Francis Joseph Kelly was born in Athlone, Co. Roscommon. An Arts Student by occupation, he attested for service with the 5th Dragoon Guards at Aldershot on 28 November 1890, aged 17 years, 5 months. With them he served in India, September 1893-October 1899. Kelly served in the Punjab Frontier and Tirah campaigns of 1897-98 attached to No.6 British Field Hospital, 1st Brigade, 1st Division, Tirah Field Force, being one of only eight men of his regiment to receive the medal with those two clasps. He was posted to South Africa in October 1899 and saw service in the defence of Ladysmith. Extending his service to complete 12 years with the colours, he transferred to the 7th Dragoon Guards in March 1902. With the 7th Dragoon Guards he served in Egypt, September 1908-November 1910. Kelly was discharged on the termination of his second period of engagement on 16 November 1911. Sold with copied service papers, roll extracts and other research.
