James Edmons was born in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire. A Labourer by occupation, he attested for the Oxfordshire Light Infantry on 17 October 1887. With them he served in India, September-October 1889; Burma, October 1889-December 1892, and India, December 1892-May 1894. He was transferred to the Army Reserve in October 1894 and finally discharged as time expired on 16 October 1899.
