Approximately 100 dated ‘1848’ long service medals were awarded, this example being approved on 3 December, 1850, the last known award of the ‘1848’ dated issue; the ultimate award is thought to have been made on 6 December 1850 to Frederick Woodrow, Seaman's Schoolmaster, H.M.S. Volage, for 28 Years service, but this medal has not yet been seen.
