Samuel Harris enlisted on 31 January 1857. He sailed with part of the 70th regiment in the Louisa from Calcutta on 22 February 1861, and arrived at Auckland on 14 May 1861. He took his Discharge by Payment in New Zealand on 31 December 1865.

The 70th were first engaged in 1863, taking part in the fight at Katikara, Taranaki. On moving north, the regiment saw action at Koheroa, Cameron Town and Orakau before returning to Taranaki. The regiment was at Kaitake and in Chute's Taranaki campaign. When it returned to England in 1866, the regiment had been on foreign service for 17 years in India and New Zealand.
