18th Century, Scotland, Perthshire, Deanston, a France, Louis XV, Half-Écu aux lauriers [1726-41], obv. countermarked adelphi cotton work around a woolsack, 13.00g (Manville 24; Brodie 233). Coin worn virtually flat, countermark good fine, rare (£300-350)

The cotton mills at Deanston were erected in 1785 by John Buchanan, but by 1794 his younger brother Archibald, installed as manager, was having difficulty maintaining the labour force which forced the sale of the business. The tokens are believed to have circulated between 1785 and 1794
