Plate 3. HMS Culloden, the fifth such Royal Navy vessel named after the Scottish battle of 1746, was a third-rate Ganges class 74-gun warship of 1,638 tons built by Randall of Rotherhithe and launched in 1783. Commanded by Capt Thomas Troubridge, the Culloden was part of Sir John Jervis’ fleet at the battle of Cape St Vincent on 14 February 1797 but, as part of Nelson’s fleet at the battle of the Nile on 1 August 1798, struck a reef during the approach to Aboukir Bay, was saved with difficulty and played no further part in the engagement. The vessel was broken up in 1813
