Following an engagement between British and Boer forces at Roodewal in June 1900, a quantity of postal orders and notes were taken from the Field Post Office. Over the next decade attempts were made to cash some of these both in South Africa and in the British Isles.

The message on the back of this note reads ‘Jack Lindo is very ill in the hospital with enteric fever…if you see his wife will you tell her as he can’t write where he is’
