Robert Arthur Edwar Benn was first commissioned in February 1887 and served with the Yorkshire Light Infantry in Burma 1887-89. He joined the Indian Political department in June 1895 and became political assistant in April 1898. He was H.B.M.’s Consul at Seistan, November 1900; assistant political agent, Chagai, February 1905; political agent, Kalat, and in charge of the Bolan Pass, July 1906 to August 1912; assistant resident, Mewar, December 1913; political agent and H.B.M.’s Consul, Muscat, March 1914; political agent, Haraoti and Tonk, November 1915; resident, Jaipur, February 1916 until his retirement in February 1922.
