Marshall); Borough of Hartlepool Special Constabulary ‘Bombardment of Hartlepool’ Medal, obverse: a hart at bay (Sergt.), 35mm., silver, mounted as worn; together with a West Hartlepool Special Constabulary Badge, 57 x 44mm., enamalled, pin-backed, this with enamel damage, nearly very fine; medals good very fine and better (4) £450-550

The reverse inscription, ‘Borough of Hartlepool Special Constable, Bombardment 1914, Zeppelin 1916 Destroyed, Air Raids 1915-18’ refers in part to the bombardment of Hartlepool by German Naval forces on 16 December 1914. The battlecruisers Seydlitz and Moltke and the heavy cruiser Blücher bombarded Hartlepool, whilst the Derfflinger and Von der Tann attacked Scarborough and Whitby. Civilian casualties in Hartlepool numbered 112 killed and some 200 wounded.
