Six: Private J. Powell, Parachute Regiment

Joseph Powell was born in Widnes on 6 May 1923. During the Second World War he served in Sicily, Italy, Southern France, Greece, Yugoslavia, Albania, Austria and Palestine. Serving a total of seven years in the Army, he served the last two with the 4th Parachute Regiment, being employed as a Piat Specialist (Projector, Infantry, Anti-Tank) and Company Storeman. He was discharged from the Regiment in March 1946. Postwar he lived at 45 Clapgate Lane, Goose Green, Wigan and was employed as a Supervisor in a food factory. He died in Billinge Hospital on 31 May 1975.

Sold with three wartime photographs; 4th Parachute Regiment Testimonial; letter re. Efficiency Medal; his and his wife’s death certificates; his son’s birth certificate; his wife’s Identity and Medical Cards; a sketch and other certificates relating to his wife’s family (Maloney); also a booklet: By Air to Battle, the official account of the British 1st and 6th Airborne Divisions, 144pp., inscribed and signed by the recipient.
