Joseph Wilson Rowell was born on 13 November 1891. Initially serving in the ranks of the Devonshire Regiment, he received a commission on 21 September 1915 to the Indian Army Reserve of Officers, being attached to the 84th Punjabis. Promoted to Lieutenant on 21 September 1916, he was appointed Company Officer attached to the 62nd Punjabis on 3 November 1916. During 1919-20 he was Officiating Company Commander and Adjutant, 62nd Punjabis, and was promoted to Captain on 21 June 1920. During the Great War he served in Iraq, 9 October 1916-11 November 1918, and served in Iraq again during 1920. He was then appointed Staff Captain with the 2nd Indian Infantry Brigade at Jamrud, October 1921-October 1922, after which he returned to the 1/1st Punjab Regiment (former 62nd Punjabis) and was Adjutant, 1922-27, promoted Major, 19 June 1934, and appointed Company Commander, 1927-38. Rowell was attached to the 11th (Indian Territorial Force) Battalion 1st Punjab Regiment on 25 October 1938 and was Ajutant 11/1st Punjab Regiment from 2 October 1939. He held the rank of Acting Lieutenant-Colonel 4 September-1 October 1939 and 15 October-16 December 1940, was appointed Temporary Lieutenant-Colonel on 17 December 1940 and promoted to that rank on 19 June 1942. Lieutenant-Colonel Rowell retired from the Indian Army on 25 January 1946. Sold with copied research.
