Arthur William Hill Gelston was born on 23 June 1839. Commissioned an Ensign in the 3rd Regiment (The Buffs) in September 1860, he was advanced to Lieutenant in July 1864, was appointed Instructor of Musketry in October 1869 and promoted to Captain in December 1873. In April 1878 he was appointed Paymaster in the Army Pay Department, serving with the 3rd Regiment. Serving during the Zulu War of 1879, he was present in the engagement at Inyezane and the investment of Ekowe. Appointed Honorary Major in the A.P.D. in April 1883 and Staff Paymaster Lieutenant-Colonel in June 1884, still with the Buffs. Gelston served with the Egyptian Frontier Field Force during 1885-86. He was promoted to Honorary Lieutenant-Colonel in June 1891, appointed Substantive Lieutenant-Colonel in February 1899, retired in June 1899 and died on 4 October 1923. Sold with copied research.
