John Richard Medland was born in Stoke Deveril, Devon, on 22 June 1854. He entered the Royal Navy as a Boy aboard Impregnable on 13 January 1869. Rated as a Signalman 2nd Class in January 1873, he served on Modeste, January 1874-May 1877. He was promoted to Signalman in March 1878 when on the Royal Adelaide, Yeoman of Signals when on the same ship in January 1880 and Chief Yeoman of Signals when on the Orlando in November 1889. He was pensioned ashore on 24 June 1892. Sold with copied service papers.
