India, Guptas, Chandragupta I (c. 320-335), Stater, King standing, holding sceptre, regarding his bride Kumaradevi to whom he offers a gift, trefoil between their feet, rev. Lakshmi seated facing on lion reclining right, holding cornucopiæ and fillet, 7.47g/12h (BMC p.10, 27; Altekar pl. 1, 12). About very fine, rare (£400-500)

John Allen attributed this type to Samudragupta in the BMC catalogue. He concluded that Samudragupta issued this type to commemorate his parents’ marriage and his family’s alliance with the Lichchhavi family. However, A.S. Altekar, in his catalogue of the Bayana hoard, attributes this type to Chandragupta himself
