Jersey was occupied by German forces on 1 July 1940. Bank of England notes and local coinage quickly disappeared from circulation and early in 1941 the Royal Court of Jersey was able to approve an emergency issue of Two Shilling notes which would not exceed £5,000 in total. In December a further issue of Two Shilling notes was approved as the authorities realized that a greater quantity was needed. Edmund Blampied (1886-1966) was approached and asked to design a set of notes and in April 1942 a new series of notes for Sixpence, One Shilling, Two Shillings, Ten Shillings and One Pound was issued. The notes were printed by J.T.Bigwood Ltd and all carry the printed signature of Herbert Ereaut, treasurer of the States of Jersey
