A fine Great War ‘Sanctuary Wood’ M.C. group of four awarded to Second Lieutenant E. W. F. Hammond, Honourable Artillery Company

Military Cross, G.V.R., unnamed as issued; 1914 Star (676 L. Cpl., H.A.C.); British War and Victory Medals, with M.I.D. oak leaf (2. Lieut.); memorial plaque (Ernest William Frost Hammond) nearly extremely fine or better (5) £2000-2500

M.C. London Gazette 29 October 1915 ‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during a bomb fight at Sanctuary Wood on 30 September 1915. Although severely wounded in the right side during the afternoon and unable to use his right arm, he remained at the front using his left arm till after nightfall, when his wound compelled him to retire.’

Ernest William Frost Hammond was killed in action at Bullecourt on 3 May 1917, whilst serving with the Honourable Artillery Company. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France.
