William Taylor, son of Alexander Taylor, was born in Lintmill, Banffshire on 1 May 1892. Educated at Fordyce Academy, Banffshire, he was the recipient of three school awards. Attending the University of Aberdeen, he gained an M.A. in 1913 and was the recipient of the Hutton Prize and Bain Medal. With the onset of war, he served with the Y.M.C.A. in France, 1914-15. On 23 March 1915 Taylor entered the Army as a Private in the 4th Battalion Gordon Highlanders and was commissioned on 8 October the same year. He served at home, 1915-16, and in France/Flanders, January 1916-December 1918. For his services he was mentioned in despatches (London Gazette 4 January 1917).
