Thomas Silverwood, who was born in 1871, enlisted as a Trooper in the recently raised Special Squadron of Steinaecker’s Horse in February 1902, following 20 months with the Kaffrarian Rifles and five months with the Queenstown Mounted Infantry - he gave his next of kin as his sister, Miss F. E. Silverwood, of Ridley Road, Forest Gate, London. He was discharged at Pretoria on the disbandment of his unit in July 1902.
