George Horace Smith, who was born in December 1872, served in the 1st Royal Dragoons 1889-96, following which he joined ‘W’ Division of the Metropolitan Police. Recalled to the Colours on the advent of hostilities in South Africa, he served in the 6th Dragoons from October 1899 to November 1900, and again from February to May 1901, before returning to his duties as a policeman. He was pensioned from ‘T’ Division of the Metropolitan Police in March 1922, having onetime served on mounted duties in the Mitcham area.
