Charles Glen was born in Edinburgh on 13 June 1859. He entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 18 September 1874. He was advanced to Boy 1st Class on 6 October 1875 when on St. Vincent, and Ordinary Seaman on 13 June 1877 when on the Raleigh. Up to this point his service was rated as ‘very good’ or ‘exemplary’. It then deteriorated; with a period in the Cells and Military Prison, Malta, January 1878-April 1879. He was advanced to Able Seaman when on the Raleigh in December 1879. His service then continued, rated ‘Fair’, ‘Indifferent’ or ‘Bad’ and he served 28 days in Edinburgh Gaol in October 1880. Serving on the Humber from 12 June 1882, he is shown as being in the ‘Cells’, 12 June 1882-8 September 1882 and then sentenced to 12 months imprisonment at Canterbury Gaol on 21 February 1883. A medal is recorded as being ‘sent to party (under cover to Governor Canterbury Prison) 24.7.83’; though one wonders as to his clasp entitlement as the ‘Humber’ was not awarded those clasps, and in the case of ‘Alexandria’ he was in the cells at the time.
