Postmarked Letter, from J. Field, an army officer in India, aboard the Madagascar, to his brother Edward Field, R.N. of Chesham, Buckinghamshire, dated 1 October 1845, largely espousing Christianity, the script covers the sheet both horizontally and vertically, part torn, fold marks, fairly good condition £30-40

John Field was nominated a Cadet for the Bombay Infantry in 1838 and arrived in India in 1840. He served with the field force in Sind and Afghanistan, 1841-44, was present at the engagement at Heykulzye and the defeat and capture of Meer Shah Mahomed, he commanded the 10th Bombay Native Infantry at the attack on the town and fort of Beyt in October 1859 and at the siege and capture of Dwarka in November the same year. Commanded the Advance Brigade of the Expeditionary Force to Abyssinia for which he received the Approbation of the Government. In the same campaign he was for a time appointed a Brigadier-General and commanded the 3rd Brigade, 1st Division. Later, resuming command of the 10th N.I. he was present at the capture of Magdala. For his services he was awarded the C.B. and became an A.D.C. to the Queen, 1868-79. General Field died in Guildford on 16 April 1899.
